Some projects take root long before the first design meeting. The Winchester Park Pebble Mosaic Project felt like one of those – shaped not only by a summer of collaboration, but by ReDefine Arts’ twenty years in relationship with this neighbourhood. As Lead Artist and Designer, I carried that history with me: the conversations, gatherings, creative projects, and shared moments that have unfolded in and around Winchester Park.
Working with community members this summer – elders, kids, longtime St. James Town residents, and people simply passing through – reminded me that public art holds its strength in both form and relationship. The process matters. When stories and small gestures weave into the making, the artwork becomes fuller.
The four mosaics that now anchor the corners of Winchester Park grew from this layered making. Many Peoples Under One Sky carries patterns inspired by participants’ imaginings, workshop experiments, and the park’s textures. Each circle is a gathering point – a place to pause, sit, or notice the details underfoot.
At the October unveiling, surrounded by drumming, song, and the many faces that shaped this work, I felt the quiet power of creating something lasting together. These mosaics are not just markers in the landscape; they’re touchstones of shared effort and care.
As we carry this momentum forward, I’m also happy to share that ReDefine Arts has launched KIMI – the Knowledge Incubator & Mentorship Initiative – a new mentorship program that pairs artists and community organizations with experienced Artist-Mentors.
I’m grateful to everyone who contributed their time, creativity, and presence to the Winchester Park Pebble Mosaic Project. My hope is that the mosaics meet you gently as you move through the park – inviting reflection, a sense of belonging, and a moment under our shared sky.
